Discovered a design problem after the purchase

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Richmond Water Heater Model 6V30FT, 29 Gallon Tall Gas:

After the purchase, and install, I discovered that the fresh combustion air intake covers a large area near the bottom of the heater, and can not be easily isolated. This is an issue for people with a mobile home which has an outdoor accessible water heater closet, and live in an area that has cold Winters.

This is supposed to be a water heater suitable for a mobile home. My previous experience with water heaters, over more than 30 years living here, is that I have allowed fresh air into the lower front of the water heater, and insulated the rest of the front of the water heater closet. No problems with pipe freeze, even down to the occasional -15 degrees F, in Winter. This model has the air intake spread around nearly all of the lower base, except the front, which is sealed.

This is a very poor design decision, leaving the purchaser to try to figure out how to keep the water heater closet warm, and still allow fresh air to the water heater. It appears my only solution will be to install an electric outlet into the WH closet, and install heat tape on the pipes. Another thing: I called their Customer assistance phone number, shown on the front of the water heater, and it rang in to a sales pitch for senior emergency help devices with subscription service. Not the Technical Support that was stated.

This water heater was purchased from Menards, whom does not have any user review system set up on their website.

The fact that they are selling products like this water heater, is an indication of why they don't allow user / purchaser reviews. My recommendation, is to buy your water heater from a reputable dealer that does have user reviews posted.

I installed this water heater last August and it has failed 4 times. They sent me new parts and those have failed.

Now again I'm waiting for parts to be shipped to me. The 800 # is a joke and if you call after hours you go through all the 10 phone prompts and then the you their closed.

Use on a well system

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Do not use natural gas tankless model rmtg70dvln-3 on a well system or in any application where there are fluctuations, no matter how small, in the pressure. The power vent will arbitrarily cycle off and on with any change in pressure.

The pressure switch is far too sensitive for a well or any application.

This is NOT only caused by a crossover in a faucet mixing valve as their customer will try to convince you of, but any change in pressure instead of flow. Terrible design resulting in premature failure of parts owing to useless

cycling.

Loss of hot water

Should have read reviews, but was in a bind with previous tank leak. Bought at Menards, 11.24.24, on and off issues for 4 months, customer support will send control valve assy.

40 gal gas 36,000.

Hope the replacement works more than a few months, otherwise it's coming out, and will roll back into Menards. Very disappointed.

Loss of hot water

Very disappointed, should have read reviews. 40 gal 36,000, piece of crap for 4 months.

Waiting on control valve. Installed 11.24.24, customer service notified 4.6.25. Bought from Menards in pinch.

If this won't fix, will roll right back to Menards for something else. Not reliable at this point and I don't recommend.

Richmond Water Heaters - New tank leaked from the get go.

I Bought a new hot water heater and it leaked from the top where the pop off valve is right from the get go. The plumber set the thermostat at 130 and left.

The water was luke warm for several weeks.

When I did get the plumber back he pulled the pipe and it had no pipe tape on it right from the factory. I don't recommend these heaters.

Unrelated to your leak issue but it looks like your plumber has the Pex too close to the water outlet. The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC 604.13) states that “PEX tubing shall not be installed within the first 18 inches of piping connected to a water heater." Keep en eye on that.

Researching new water heaters

if can find a vendor locally and price is comparable

Original review May 28, 2024

In the summer of 1998 I purchased and installed a Richmond electric water heater. That was 26 years go.

Noticed moisture on the top of the unit under the insulation blanket. Thought that it had developed a leak so started looking for replacement. On closer examination discovered that the leak was from a loose connection on the flex line. Tightened and leak went away.

Replaced the heating elements twice in this time period. Unfortunately the new products on the market won't last anywhere near this time frame according to the reviews.

Not sure if this brand is still available. If can locate give it a try.

7 years in new home and on failed hot water tank NUMBER 2 with Richmond. These units are pure garbage as I'm seeing multiple consumers with same issues on this forum.

How much fun is it to drag this heavy heap of trash up and down stairs to the basement every couple of years? TONS of fun, where's the CEO to come and help >:[
